The foundation underneath the mattress is important for providing support and height. The right bed base will ensure the mattress is properly supported and distribute weight proportionally so that it wears evenly.

Some of the most common types of mattress foundations are: Box Springs, Platform Beds, Bed Frames and Adjustable Beds

Box Spring foundations are designed to be used with either a bed frame including a headboard, footboard and cross slats with center support, or a metal bed frame with cross supports and center support.

Platform beds take the place of a box spring and metal frame. As long as there is a sufficient number of slats (cross supports) and center support, then the mattress can be properly supported. The slats need to be no farther than 4 inches apart for innerspring mattresses, or less than 3 inches apart for memory foam mattresses. If not, the mattress can dip between the slats and take away from the support of the mattress.

Metal bed frames are designed to be used with box springs.

Adjustable bed foundations take the place of box spring and metal frame and provide excellent support for the mattress. There are many options for adjustable beds that offer features such as raising the head and foot of the bed, massage, and programmable buttons for storing favorite positions.
