How big is a Full Size Mattress?

Full size mattresses (aka Double Size) dimensions are 54" wide by 75" long.

Up until the 1970's, the double size mattress (aka full size) was the most popular size. Most european beds and antique bed frames are all in this size. Just in the last 50 years has the Queen size taken over as the most popular size mattress.

How tall will my mattress be?

You may want to consider the thickness of the model as well as the thickness of the box springs, because the combination of the mattress and box springs plus the frame it sits on will give the total height of the bed.  Box springs come in 9-inch and 5-inch low profile height. Most metal bed frames measure 7 inches, so a metal frame, 9 inch box spring and 11 inch mattress would total 27 inches off the ground.

A comfortable height to get into and out of a bed is above the knees and below the buttocks. This can be especially important for people with mobility issues.

Should I get a Full Size or Queen Size?

Full size mattresses are ideal for smaller bedrooms, guestrooms, dorm rooms, small apartments or anywhere you want to maximize space. Also, taller people appreciate the 5 inches of extra length that a Queen size has. Couples will sleep better on a larger size mattress, so if there is room for a queen size and the bed is expected to be used for sharing, then a queen size would be better.

Full size mattress reviews often talk about the comfort and support of the model, but rarely mention if the dimensions were what they expected.
