RV Mattress Short Queen

So you bought a new RV and it's time to replace the short queen RV mattress?

Here are a few things to consider when buying a new mattress for an RV, 5th Wheel, or travel trailer.

  1. Make sure to measure.  Some RV's have what is called a short queen (60 inches wide by 75 inches long) which is 5 inches shorter than a regular queen size (60 inches wide by 80 inches long). Some trailers require a custom size or perhaps even a mattress with a corner cut if there is a closet or bathroom door that might be in the way.
  2. Check for height & clearance. Some spaces have a low ceiling or tables that might be too high or too low if the mattress is not the right height. Imaginge bumping your head on the corner of the nightstand because it was just the wrong height.
  3. Make sure you can fit it through the door. Some mattresses don't bend very easily due to firmness. Some mattresses come rolled up and wrapped which can make it easier to get it in the door and into the space where it will live. Other options like Tempurpedic  and memory foam are flexible and can more easily be carried through the tight doorway.
  4. How much does it weigh? Usually mattress weight is not an issue when it's placed inside a home, but when you are hauling it behind a vehicle or in a motorhome, every extra pound can equal less fuel efficiency, and that can really add up over time. Some mattresses such as air chamber number beds offer a lighter weight and adjustable firmness (using about 60 watts of electricity when being adjusted) and can really save on fuel efficiency.
  5. Make sure it is comfortable. The last thing you want when you head out on your adventure is to regret purchasing a mattress that isn't comfortable. You are still going to sleep on it everynight, and you can definitely enjoy your time more when you are well rested.
