Down Comforters
Down comforters offer a light and fluffy feel with great warmth and comfort. The most common type of down comforter is goose down. The weight and insulation of comforters is measured in fill power. The fill power ranges from 450 to 850, with the higher the fill power, the higher the insulation and weight. In Europe the comforter is called a duvet. Often a duvet cover is used with a comforter to provide a washable cover for decorative purposes. Most comforters have a small strand of material at the corners to make attaching the comforter inside the duvet easy. The size of the box stitching and the stitching of the edges, as well as the thread count of the cover make a difference in the quality. A high quality comforter will have a higher fill power, perhaps 650 or 750, as well as a higher thread count cover such as 400, and be over sized.
Down Alternative Comforters
Down alternative comforters are most often made from polyester material and mimic the feeling and loft of a down comforter. The material is hypoallergenic and offers a warm feel. Less expensive than down, the alternative down comforter has a similar feel but is great for people who are allergic to down. These models also will work with duvet covers.
