Pillows are designed to support your head and neck while you are asleep, so your neck and upper back muscles can relax. The wrong pillow can put your spine out of alignment and cause your muscles to work throughout the night, which in turn causes them to be tired in the morning. Neck stiffness is often caused by stiff muscles from improper pillow support.
Mattress protectors are essential for keeping your mattress in a sanitary condition and preventing bacteria and mold from growing inside. People can shed up to 7 layers of skin in a 30 day time frame, and sweat up to a pint per night. This plus airborn dander, pollen, and other particles can settle into your mattress over time. By using a high quality mattress protector, you can prevent this from happening, keep your mattress is better condition, and sleep more comfortably with less cleaner air around you.
Most mattress protectors and encasements are machine washable. It's important to follow the washing instructions as improper care can damage or destroy the protector. Even low heat in the dryer will exceed the 140 degrees necessary to kill any bacteria. High heat can cause the waterproof backing to fail, so it's recommended to use low heat wash and dry.
Bed sheets serve several functions.
One, they offer a decorative function by creating a color scheme in the bedroom and can offer an accent of color to contrast the color of walls, bed frames, drapes and other decor.
Two, and perhaps the most important, they offer a feel and comfort to the bed. Low quality polyester sheets with a low threadcount material can feel like sand paper or rough burlap. High quality cotton or Eucalyptus material with a high thread count cover can feel super soft, cool and luxurious. Thread count, if too high, can insulate the body heat causing sleepers to get too hot and wake up at night. It's important to consider these factors when choosing a bed sheet.
Comforters, also known as Duvets, are usually made of either synthetic polyester material or goose down. Both materials can offer insulation and warmth. While polyester material is cheaper to produce, once the fibers stick together it is very difficult to refluff. Down material can be refluffed over and over and maintains its loft a lot longer.
The baffle box size is the size of the squares that the quilt stitching creates. Baffle box size ranges from 8 inches to 22 inches, and the larger the box the more the material can shift and move throughout the comforter creating bunches and clumps. A 14 to 16 inch baffle box is pretty typical and minimizes the shifting of the fill material.
The edge of the comforter is usually sewn with either a seem, or a double stitch seem and higher quality versions often have a nicer piping edge for a smooth feel. This also reduces the chance of the edge seam coming open and material coming out.
Some quality comforters come with corner anchors which are small straps that stretch over the 1-2 inches from each corner and are designed for tying it into a duvet cover. A duvet cover is similar to a sheet and provides a smooth washable cover for the comforter. This way you can wash the cover frequently and only wash the comforter on a rare occassion. Duvet covers also allow for many color options.
Weighted blankets are made from a two sided blanket with glass beads inside. This offers a moderate to significant amount of weight to the blanket that can help the sleeper feel more cozy and comfortable. Weighted blankets have been used to reduce tossing and turning and anxiety.
Mattress toppers are not a fix for a worn out mattress. They are however a great option for people who purchased a mattress that is too firm and need to increase the comfort and pressure relief. They are also a great option for guest beds, because you can purchase a firm mattress for guests who prefer firm, then have a topper handy to put on the bed if they need a bit softer. Mattress toppers come in a variety of materials including polyeurethane foam, memory foam, latex, feather and down.
